Blog#12: German

Yuki Morita
Hello! What language do you learn as "a second foreign language" now? I learn German. It is spoken in many countries, such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It resembles English very much and it is easy to read aloud. I've learned it for a year and a half, but it is difficult for me to learn a language besides English.
When I graduated from my high school, we sang "Beethoven's Ninth Symphony". In my high school, students sing "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven every year. The composition is very famous, so you have listened to it surely. The words were written in German. I like "Beethoven's Ninth Symphony", and I was happy to sing it, so I was interested in German. Recently, I listen to it conducted by Seiji Ozawa, a  Japanese conductor.

I think its pronunciation is very powerful. I can't pronounce it well, but I want to speak it, and visit Germany someday.
Please tell me about the language you learn now!

  1. Hi Yuki,
I learn French in Gakushuin University now. The reason I chose it to learn as a second foreign language is that I like French pronunciation. It sounds like a song.

  2. Hi Moritti!
A year ago, I learned Chinese in Gakushuin University because I thought that the language was very easy. In fact, it was easy, but English was easier than Chinese.
Now, I learn Spanish there because I have heard that it is easy language by my friend. In fact, it is more difficult than Chinese. But, I want to know and feel many foreign world! So, I don't regret that I choose Spanish.
I take four language's classes in a week. I take part in every class because they are very fun for me!

  4. I studied French from elementary school to the end of university. Since it is the second official language of Canada, it is widely used across the country. When I was in high school I spent part of my summer holiday on a French immersion program in Quebec. I had a homestay experience and took French lessons at a school during the day. The people there could hardly speak English so it was very hard to "live" in French for 2 weeks. But it was interesting to see the lifestyle of rural Quebec.
I studied German during university because many of the texts I needed to use for my research were written in German.
Now my main focus is Japanese, though I am still not very good. I would appreciate any help you could give me to improve my Japanese!
