Blog #5: My summer vacation!

Manami Hiramoto
Hello. Recently it has been very very hot! So be careful of heatstroke when you stay outside for a long time. Well, the picture is a summer greeting card I received.

By the way, our summer vacation will be coming, you know. Did you decide what to do in your summer vacation? For example, to do something outdoor sports, to take a trip and to meet your old friends and so on. They are so nice!
Talking about me, I’m going to try to begin new stuff. I mean I will start a part time job during summer vacation. I am expected work as a guide at “the Castle of Kids” whose Japanese name is "こどもの城”. When I was a child, I went there with my family. I enjoyed playing in it.

It is a compound institution: it is mainly a playground for children under 18 years of age and it has two theaters, several meeting rooms for adults. There is the castle in front of Aoyama Gakuin University and beside United Nations University in Omotesando. Many people visit the castle especially on holiday. Sometimes it has 3000 visitors! And there are not only Japanese families but also families from abroad. Some families from abroad can speak Japanese, others only understand English. That’s why I must practice to talk to them in English naturally.
Please tell me what you plan to do during the vacation. Have a nice summer vacation!

  1. Hello, Manami!
First, the top photo is so cute! They look very tired because of the heat. I'm also lazy in my home, like them!

I don't know “the Castle of Kids”, but it looks interesting. I respect you because you have a strong mind to study English!! In our life, we don't use it very much. I hope you will meet a valuable experience!

I will go to a driving school in Tottori during summer vacation. In fact, I'm afraid of cars… but I'll stick it out, like you!

  3. Hi Manami,
Thanks for sharing your summer greeting card. It reminds me I have to buy some to send to my friends in Japan this summer. I usually send several 暑中見舞い. How about you?

The place where you will work looks like fun, but I bet you are really busy. I worked at a theatre during my university days (that was one of my many jobs). I worked in the box office there, so I sold tickets over the phone and at the counter at the theatre box office. The theatre is called The Shaw Festival Theatre, and it is based on the theatre of the same name in England. It shows live plays written by George Bernard Shaw and his contemporaries.

    Happy vacation everyone!

p.s. Enjoy travelling around Japan, Ryota. And good luck with your driving lessons, Yuki. I think you will get over your fear once you start to practice in the car. Drive safely!

  6. Hi Manami, ✿
This is Koto Mizunoya of group F.

It was Soooooo hot this summer ! and still now hot weather continues.

I have visited “こどもの城” sometimes when I was small, but I don’t remember well.

Did you have a fun to work there^^? Maybe you loved kids and were loved by kids so much!

To tell the truth, I didn't like kids so much. I didn't know how to play with them, because I'm an only child. I met some kids and needed to take care of them this summer. I'm one of suppoters of some NGOs. While some of us taught about the poor children in Ecuador at elementary school in Ohta-ku, I took care of youger kids. They were really funny! It was my small and nice experience to find kids were funny and cute! One of kids (=about 7years old) loved me so much and told me the SPECIAL SECRET of his favorite Sushi restaurant, and promised he would take me there. Unfortunately I missed the boy's name.

Your job was very nice to practice English!, and you had many valuable experiences and wonderful memories! (The kid I met were Japanese. ^^; My experience was not so valuable like yours.)

Next time, I'll try to find such a beneficial part-time job like you!
